What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site.

Do I need SEO?
You might not be doing SEO for your website at the moment, but you can be sure that your competitors are. In that case, their rivals are getting all that lovely website traffic that you should be getting for yourself.

With our Yearly Contract, we guarantee that your will have at least one first page position in the first 3 months after all changes are compete. I'm not sure what to do/ what keywords to pick etc...
Don't worry about this! We have access to data which shows us which related phrases real people have been using in the past few months! There is no point blindly going for vague, generic phrases. It is better to target realistic phrases that people are actually using to find websites like yours. There is no point in optimising your site for phrases people are not using or for phrases that are going to take too long!

Can't I just stuff the Meta Keywords tag with all my keywords?
This is a technique that worked several years ago and it no longer works! Search engines like Google are much more sophisticated now and are much better at actually 'reading' the visible text on the page i.e. your content! Therefore, you should concentrate on having relevant content on your pages. Most search engines in fact ignore the meta keywords tag so there is no point in using this outdated tactic.

Can I use hidden text?
Like the point above, this tactic is no longer recommended and in fact is frowned upon by the search engines. If you are found to be using this technique (which is very likely) then your site is bound to be heavily penalised!

What is the most used search engine?
Without doubt, Google is by far the most widely used search engine and accounts for around 70-80% of online searches in the UK. However, if your site ranks highly in other popular search engines such as Yahoo, MSN, AOL and ASK then you should still receive a decent number of enquiries.

What are spiders, robots, and crawlers?
A web crawler (also known as a web spider or web robot), is a program or automated script which browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner. This process is called web crawling or spidering. Many sites, in particular search engines, use spidering as a means of providing up-to-date data. Web crawlers are mainly used to create a copy of all the visited pages for later processing by a search engine that will index the downloaded pages to provide fast searches. Crawlers can also be used for automating maintenance tasks on a website, such as checking links or validating HTML code.

What are Meta Description Tags?
This doesn't really affect your rankings but it is useful to use as a mini sales pitch. This is what usually appears in the search engines results so if done well, it can 'hook' people into your site. return to top

Which search engines will my website be submitted to?
Along with the obvious major ones like Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, ASK etc your site will also be submitted to around 30 of the most popular search engines. We appreciate that the more obscure search engines will not generate much traffic. However, because they are smaller, they are useful in that they can give an early indication as to how well the SEO is doing.

Which directories will my website be submitted to?
Your site will be submitted to directories that pass real value. That is, we will not waste time submitting your site to hundreds of directories that will bring no benefit to your site. Unlike others, we will not try to mislead you by saying we're submitting to hundreds of sites. We know the best ones to use and which ones work e.g Google, DMOZ, Yell plus a few others. As well as this, we also use social bookmarking/networking sites like Digg, Delicious, Facebook, Myspace etc.
